iGuides are self-paced Learning4Life study guides written to help
you process the information in selected books, with questions that
will lead you to consider how the author's concepts fit into your
ministry situation.
We ask that you register with us first. Once we have received your
registration form, we will send you the book and a CD with the
iGuide document. If you already have the book, feel free to
download the documents linked below.
Let us know the name, author and publisher of any books you want
to suggest for inclusion. Also, if you would like to write the learning
guide for the book, contact us. We're always looking for good
writers.
The iGuides we have available now are listed below with
descriptions condensed from the book covers. Read all the way to
the bottom for a list of iGuides coming soon.
New! The Heart of Mentoring, by David A. Stoddard
How are you investing your life? Getting the most out of life isn't about how
much you keep for yourself, but how much you pour into others. This book will help
you learn how. Please register to receive the CD. The files are quite large.
New! Maximum Impact Short-Term Mission, by Roger Peterson,
Gordon Aeshliman, and Wayne Sneed
This book is written for the field practitioner, not for the person "going on a mission
trip." It will help you prepare for and experience successful short-term mission with
results that contribute to your work on the field.
Think Like Jesus, by George Barna
What is biblical perspective on life? To put it simply, Barna says, it is a "way of
dealing with the world so that we act like Jesus, twenty-four hours a day, because
we think like Jesus. It’s like wearing a pair of eyeglasses that enable us to see
things differently, to see things from God’s point of view, and to respond to these
perceptions in the way He prescribes."
Leading Cross-Culturally, by Sherwood Lingenfelter
Sherwood Lingenfelter helps the reader understand his or her own leadership
culture (and its blind spots), examine it critically in light of Scripture, and become an
effective learner of other cultural perspectives on leadership. He also confronts the
issues of power inherent in any leadership situation. Lingenfelter carefully defines
cross-cultural leadership and unpacks that definition throughout the book, with an
emphasis on building communities of vision, trust, and empowerment through
leadership based on biblical principles. In the end, he argues that leaders must
inhabit the gospel story to be effective cross-culturally.
The Character of Leadership, by Jeff Iorg
The Book on Leadership, by John MacArthur
MacArthur shows that leadership does not come from a job title. It isn't a matter of
personality or charisma, and it isn't just authority. Based on the works of the
apostle Paul, this study will help you find the characteristics of a true leader.
Margin, by Richard Swenson, MD
Swenson provides a prescription against the danger of overloaded lives.
Focusing on margin in four key areas, he offers an overall picture of health that
employs contentment, simplicity, balance, and rest. The iGuide includes videos of
colleagues with examples and recommendations. Please register to receive the CD
as the files are quite large.
Southern Baptist Consensus and Renewal, by David Dockery
This book calls Southern Baptists to boldly unite and renew their commitment to
the gospel, biblical authority, and their confessional heritage. The iGuide includes
an audio interview with Dr. Dockery, president of Union University. File size is 106
MB. Also, discuss the topics with your colleagues on our blog for a limited time.
The Performance Factor, by Pat MacMillan
Organizations that have successfully developed team strategies are now
experiencing significant increases in productivity and services. Team resource
expert Pat MacMillan discusses the characteristics of a high performance team and
teaches you how to implement a new paradigm of leadership to bring your
organization to greater levels of effectiveness.
Cross-Cultural Servanthood, by Duane Elmer
Whether you're going on your first short-term mission trip or ministering overseas
for extended periods, this useful guide is essential reading for anyone who wants
to serve effectively in international settings with grace and sensitivity.
Third Culture Kids, by David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken
The authors pioneered the TCK profile more than a decade ago, pointing out the
emotional and psychological realities that come with the TCK journey. This new,
expanded version of the book explores the challenges and benefits that TCKs
encounter.
Missions for the Glory of God, from SB Journal of Theology
This is available completely as a download. The entire Winter 2005 issue of the
Journal is about missions.
Church Planting Movements, by David Garrison
self-study or team leader
This book reveals how God is turning millions to new life in Jesus Christ through
the miracle of Church Planting Movements.
Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours, by Roland Allen
Profoundly biblical, Allen's "methods" are drawn from a scrupulous examination of
Paul the apostle's own principles for missionary work. He argues that these
apostolic principles--founded on an unwavering belief in the Holy Spirit indwelling
new believers and churches--are as relevant today as they were in the formative
years of the church.
The Great Omission, by Steve Saint
Steve Saint shows how missions strategies have unwittingly harmed the
indigenous church by creating dependencies and failing to include the local
believers in the work of the church.
Case Study: Church Planting
This example from West Africa gives a real life story of what can happen when we
join God where He is working.
Case Study: Cross Cultural Hospitality
Some have been given the gift of hospitality, and the rest of us have to learn it.
This case study will help you explore and develop your own hospitality, finding
ways to use it to impact your PG.
Article: You Have to Start Meeting Like This
Excerpted from our Creative Thinking course, with new learning activities, this
article gives expert advice on conducting and attending meetings, from how to
accomplish the most in a short time to how to make your meetings fun.
Article: Confrontation
This blog posting from Bev Murrill sets the stage for some careful consideration of
your approach to confrontation. Do you avoid it at any cost? Is it ever worth the
effort? Written by one of our colleagues on the field, the questions are pertinent to
all cross-cultural workers.
Article: Manage Your Time
Based on the "rocks" illustration, this article was written by Harvey Mackay. The
iGuide was written by one of our colleagues on the field and helps you consider
the demands of the local culture and ways to set priorities effectively.
